38' Ocean Billfish is ready for charters

Thank you for visiting our fishing intellegence network website!

My name is Robert aka CRgunner

I am the "man on the ground" (and on the water) fishing and networking with all the Captains
here in Playa del Coco. What I have found ...when anglers are doing research online they get outdated information and as most fisherman know conditions and species change overnight. So we wanted to
provide an accurate up to date daily contact portal for the latest reports.
We provide daily updates with all the vital up to date information on sportsfishing
in the North Western Papagayo Bay Area. All of the charter boats in this Region of Guanacaste fish the triangle south between Tamarindo (Catalina Islands) Bat Island (Santa Rosa Parke) and Playa del Coco.

We know all the captains...their boats, their range, rates and what species of fish they raise. A problem most anglers have is putting a group together to lessen the cost of sports fishing....that's what we do....get like minded anglers together for a great day in the Papagayo Bay.

We realize pictures of other anglers catches mean nothing to you so you will not find them here. You will not find pictures of boats for hire they may be out of commission next week. You will not find charts of of species of fish and what their season is. All you need is a daily update of what is being raised by what Captain and the location of the school.

ad·ven·ture
noun: adventure; plural noun: adventures
an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.
daring and exciting activity calling for enterprise and enthusiasm.
More risk, danger, hazard, peril, uncertainty, precariousness

Most adventurous travelers want to experience the local activity/customs of the indigenous people of the country they visit. Fishing is no different, any angler with plenty of cash can charter a luxury vessel anywhere in the world. But why? Would you take a cabin cruiser down the Amazon or a dug out canoe? In a local handmade Panga you can touch the water and the pilot whales or rescue a turtle snared in a plastic bag... and back up right on a deserted beach for some snorkeling and a fresh fillet open fire picnic. If you want to try fishing with a hand line (yoyo) like the locals we have them on board....or a fly rod...or a Shimano Stella spinning reel...or Penn 50 International conventional reel....your choice.

Life is about choices...and happiness in your heart... so please don't like us on Facebook (we don't subscribe to the NSA spy grid) ...Trip Adviser?.. Who cares about a stranger's solicited experience on a boat ride....someone else telling you what THEIR certain experience was on an adventure?...the definition of adventure includes "uncertainty".

So why not save a few bucks and fund your retirement or your grandkids college fund or some clients come back the next day and fish for a different species...now that's a testimonial.

We design a customized trip for the species you want to raise.

Come experience a real adventure (you never know what will happen) ...your smile is the only tip this crew needs.

New Fishing Report

OCTOBER  to DECEMBER 2023

Warm water has provided plenty of Mahi, Wahoo, and Yellowfin. Sailfish are being raised also as the small Bonita provides an ample food source in the Bay. Roosters are omnipresent in our waters for your check off your bucket list. Best time of year with calm blue water

FEBRUARY 2022

Currently, colder water caused by high winds has brought in the Grouper and Snapper. Rainbow Runner and Sierra Mackeral are around. Yellowfin are hard to find as there has been a lot of pressure on the schools. Mahi went south to Panama for warm water

NOVEMBER 2021

Mahi NOW are in the Bay along with Yellowfin Tuna...and all other species. Wahoos are spotty and a few remain

-----------------

Red Snapper of all sizes are being raised currently. Plenty of Mackerala Sierra great eating white fillets. Rooster and Jacks always around. Mahi are 40 miles offshore. Yellowfin are VERY plentiful on rapala trolling and top water poppers

Sail and Marlin are offshore with an occasional sail following the boat inshore

September 2020 - January 2021 - Currently chasing spinner

Dolphin to find Yellowfin Tuna to cast topwater poppers 5 miles offshore in the Papagayo channel. Yellowtuna can be found inshore as well. There are medium sized mahi around also. Mahi will be larger by November.

Wahoo love the warm water and will be here until 2021.

Snapper and Grouper can be found at certain structures in the Bay.

October 2019 to January 2020

The Bay is currently yielding Yellowfin, Wahoo, Mahi, Snapper, and Mackeral. The Yellowfin are ranging in varies sizes from 10 to 50 lbs. typically boated with topwater poppers when located with spinner Dolphin. Some will hit trolling Rapala's. Same with Mahi poppers or small live Bonita on the downrigger in a slow troll. Mahi are growing larger about 1 foot a month...and by December they should be 5' and 50lbs and good action on light tackle.

Wahoo on Rapala's or ballyhoo on the downrigger with a squid skirt and wire leader at high speed in clear blue water. Wahoo should move out in January. There are a few sail in the bay on occasion but are found outside 25 miles.

Snapper ...aka pargo Rojo are pan-sized on the bottom while anchored. Colder water after Christmas will bring in the larger species aka mullet, orange, cubera and spotted snapper.

MAY 2019

The Papagayo Bay food chain has been restored due to the moratorium placed on Shrimping 2 yrs ago. The shrimp nets yield are only 20 percent shrimp the rest is cullings ie fry, krill, sardines, anchovies and small fish that are needed to complete the food chain. The Bay is flourishing with Mahi, Snapper, Yellowfin, Sail ...virtually all species are back stronger than ever. An Orca Whale was spotted several weeks ago next to our panga...very rare sight indeed.
We are using Yo-Zuri top water 3D poppers on the light spinning tackle for both yellowfin, jacks and Mahi. Rooster and Wahoo on the downrigger. Jigging for large snapper along with cut bait on the ocean floor. Shared charter is available.

January 2019

Currently there are plenty of large Mahi in the Papagayo Bay due to warm water and a large school that was here all year. The Red Snapper are moving in and we are boating various sizes. The Sail, Marlin and Jumbo Mahi are South outside Catalina towards Tamarindo. Towards Nicaragua 25 miles north there are some remaining Wahoo, AJ's, Cuberra, Rooster and Yellowfin Tuna, but high winds prevent smaller boats access to the grounds.

Papagayo Bay Report April to October 2018

We have had a great 18 months in the Bay. All the species are in with the exception of Wahoo. We are currently boating Yellow Fin, Mahi, Snapper, Grouper, Rooster and Mackerela Spanish and Sierra. Sail and Marlin are 25 miles offshore further south and will move in closer with the increase in ocean temperature. Wahoo should arrive in the coming months.

June 2017

All the species are returning to the Papagayo Bay!!!

Plenty of small Mahi around Witches Rock and in the Bay...

Loads of Wahoo around Roca Negro and Bat Islands

Yellowfin !! Boated North of the Bats....

Also large Pargo and Cubera Snapper north of Bats...

Rooster are biting and Sail Fish in and outside the Santa Rosa Parke

February 1, 2017

A few Mahi around Catalina ...as they are heading south to warmer waters. Currently boating Makarela Sierra (my shashimi favorite), Red Snapper (larger this year) Rooster 50 to 70 lbs , Jack Cravelle ...Atune negro aka Bonita ....a few Grouper are starting to move in to the colder waters of the Papagayo Bay....the wind is the big factor this time of year and we are mostly bottom fishing for Red Snapper and Grouper or inside the along the coast for Rooster.

Report for June, 2017

Warmer water has returned to the Papagayo Bay.... Sailfish, Wahoo, Dorado (Mahi Mahi), Marlin and Rooster. There  are sightings of Yellowfin Tuna and there are plenty of Black Tuna (Bonita).
We are catching plenty of Mackarela Sierra at night on cut sardine...
